Calm Birth Meditation for Pregnancy & Labor

Of all the meditation and healing modalities offered at Mettitation, the Calm Birth Method and Calm Birth meditation may be considered of supreme importance. Pregnancy and labour are momentous times in life. The pregnant person goes through an incredible journey and alteration, the pregnant couple experience this together, and the new life is created and begins to experience existence. In pregnancy and labour there is much that can be done to minimise trauma and stress and to maximise the beauty and awesomeness of the experience. Healthy children and healthy parenting begins in the earliest stages of pregnancy, and the Calm Birth meditation assists in this wish.

Is Calm Birth Meditation just for calm natural birth?

It is important to highlight that the Calm Birth Method and Calm Birth meditation is not only for natural or non-medicalised births and pregnancies.

The series of meditations taught in this method are applicable and perhaps, even more helpful, for medicated births and for cesarean births, emergency or otherwise.

If you are not able to have or do not wish to have a ‘natural’ or non-medicalised birth, the meditation for labor and pregnancy that Calm Birth provides, can help you remain connected to your body, your baby and your experience and can help to reduce the stress on the nervous system of yourself and your baby.

The Calm Birth method is made up of a number of meditations which have incredible benefits for you, your partner and your baby. These benefits can be felt throughout your pregnancy, as well as during labor and birth and are not reliant on having a ‘natural’ or non-medicalised birth.

What is Calm Birth Meditation?

Calm Birth meditation is a life changing practice of meditations for pregnancy and labor, and going forward into parenting.

The Calm Birth Method website offers this explanation: “The Calm Birth practices are evidence-based and rooted in ancient wisdom. They are grounded in time-tested techniques perfect for these modern times. Together, these practices teach you to breathe completely, rest deeply, and heal yourself and the world. They also teach you to understand the consciousness of your baby, and to deepen your bond with your wombchild.

The Calm Birth practices can be used at any point during pregnancy or birth. It’s never too early or too late to start— there are no medical risks associated with meditation. If a partner is involved, they can practice these techniques to deepen their bond with the baby and the birthing parent.”

During your sessions with Sarah at Mettitation, you will learn and experience each meditation, explore your relationship and connection to energy and breath work and receive guidance on anxieties and questions which may arise during pregnancy.

The Calm Birth meditation is suitable for all people and the organisation works hard to create language which is inclusive of all pregnant people; sessions at Mettitation are suitable for couples, single pregnant people, people of all beliefs and those without any. Please let us know if you have any concerns or questions around this.

Labor Meditation

The practice for labor meditation is called ‘Womb Breathing’ and is a simple practice of breathing completely and deeply into your lower abdomen. As with all of the meditations you will receive an audio guide to help you practice every day, you may wish to play the audio guide during your labor or you may feel comfortable to utilise the technique without the guide. There is no need for a labor meditation app, the audio simply plays from an mp4 on your device.

Meditation for labor and delivery helps you to differentiate between sensation and suffering by utilising complete breathing and awareness. This is the method that enables people to have a calm natural birth or calm medicalised birth. ‘Calm’ does not mean still and quiet, but present and with minimal stress.

The supporting meditation practices, ‘The Practice of Opening’ and ‘Giving and Receiving’, have meaningful benefits for healing, development and bonding.
